Facebook can now be used to make video calls; Better late than never!
The most popular social media platform, Facebook, has finally rolled out its video calling feature. Barring just a few countries, users can now use Facebook’s Messenger to make video calls. It is surprising to see the most popular social media platform is the last major player to join the crowded party of service providers through which we can easily make video calls. The only thing which can be said in Facebook’s defense is: Better late than never!
In order to be able to use this feature, the caller and the receiver need to have Messenger installed on their devices and both of them also need to have the updated version of Messenger. It remains to be seen that how successful this feature will turn out to be but this much is certain that it will be extremely tough for Facebook to compete against Microsoft’s Skype, Apple’s FaceTime and Google Hangouts.
In April, Facebook rolled out its video calling feature in Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, France, Greece, Ireland, Laos, Lithuania, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States and Uruguay. The biggest social networking platform announced the global availability of the video calling feature in its Messenger app on Tuesday.
David Marcus, Vice President of Messaging Products at Facebook, proudly stated, “We’re happy to share we’ve now rolled out the capability globally, with the exception of a few countries we’re still working on improving quality for.”
Everything seems to be fine on paper but the fact is that Facebook’s video calling feature is too little, too late!
